What is a Midwife?
Midwifery is the art of assisting women through childbirth – a practice dominated by female practitioners dating back to ancient Greece. It wasn’t until the 17th century that this universally accepted practice became passé and men began attending births – a practice which now dominates childbirth culture in America today.

Historically, a midwife (literally means “with woman”) was an older female in the family or community who attended births. Today, there are different types of midwives with varying backgrounds, but all view pregnancy and birth as normal life processes.

Those that follow the Midwives Model of Care share a philosophy of care that centers on the specific needs of the woman.
